Istanbul is the only city in the world that stands on two continents, and the crossing is where its real character lives. This private tour leaves the monument trail behind for the neighborhoods people actually live in, on both sides of the water.
The day starts at Beyazit Square and the old Ottoman book bazaar, one of the oldest book markets in the city. From there you walk down into Tahtakale, which is where Istanbul does its own shopping — coffee, copper, cheese, hardware, all of it loud and entirely unposed. You visit either the Grand Bazaar or the Spice Market, whichever appeals on the day, and stop at Rustem Pasha Mosque, a small Sinan building lined with some of the finest Iznik tiles in the city and walked past by almost everyone.
Then Istiklal Street and Galata, where the city turns modern and European, and a rooftop cafe with the skyline laid out below you. And then the ferry. Crossing the Bosphorus to Kadikoy is the part guests tend to remember — open water, gulls following the boat, and the Old City receding behind you. Kadikoy itself is young, loud and full of food: the fish market, the produce stalls, and the bakeries and tea gardens of Moda.

Kadikoy and Moda are where Istanbul is young and ordinary and entirely unperformed — markets, bakeries, tea gardens and a waterfront people actually use. It is also the clearest way to understand a city that lives on two continents rather than simply straddling them on a map.
Which is better, the Old City tour or Two Continents?
They answer different questions. The Old City is the great monuments — Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapi, the Grand Bazaar — and if this is your first visit to Istanbul it is usually the one to do. Two Continents is the living city on both shores, and it suits guests who have seen the icons already or who would rather not spend their day in ticket queues. If you have two days, do both; that is what our two-day tour is.
Is this tour suitable for children?
Yes, and the ferry is usually the highlight for them. There is less standing still than on a monument day and more happening around you — markets, boats, street food and room to move. Tell us their ages and we will shape the route and the stops around them.
