The Best Time to Visit Istanbul, Season by Season

Spring blossoms, quiet winters and the long golden evenings of autumn — an honest guide to when to come to Istanbul, and what each season feels like on the ground.

People always ask us the same first question: when should we come? The honest answer is that Istanbul rewards you in every season — but each one has a completely different character. Here is how the year feels to us, the people who walk these streets every week.

Spring (April–May): our quiet favourite

This is, for many of our guests, the perfect window. The Judas trees along the Bosphorus turn a deep pink, the tulips — Istanbul’s own flower long before they ever reached Holland — fill the parks of the Old City, and the light is soft and clear. Temperatures sit comfortably in the high teens and low twenties. The great monuments are busy in spring, so we buy your tickets in advance and order the day with care.

Summer (June–August): long days, warm water

Summer is bright, busy and hot. The upside is the energy: ferries running late into the evening, rooftop terraces, and the Bosphorus at its most inviting. The trick is to start early, take a long midday pause the way locals do, and save the open-air sights — a private yacht on the water, the gardens, the Asian side — for the cooler golden hours.

Autumn (September–October): the connoisseur’s season

If we had to pick one month, it might be October. The fierce heat has gone and the evenings stretch out long and golden. The food markets are at their best as the autumn produce arrives. This is when a slow, unhurried day across two continents feels effortless.

Winter (November–March): the city at its most local

Few people think of Istanbul in winter, and that is exactly its appeal. Snow settles on the domes of the Blue Mosque, the ferries cross through the mist, and there is time to warm up over endless glasses of tea. Pack a good coat and accept that some days will be grey — in return you get a more intimate, more local city, and hotel rates to match.

So, when?

For the best balance of weather, light and space to breathe, aim for late April to early June or mid-September to late October. But whenever you come, we will shape the day around the season — and around you.
