How do you combine Istanbul and Cappadocia? The usual approach is simple: spend a few days in Istanbul, then fly to Cappadocia for two or three, before heading home or onward. The two places are very different — one a great city of two continents, the other a landscape of valleys and cave villages — and together they make one of the most popular journeys in Turkey.
How much time do you need for both?
As a rough guide, three days in Istanbul and two in Cappadocia gives you a comfortable five-day trip without rushing. That is enough for the icons and the local side of Istanbul, then the valleys, villages and viewpoints of Cappadocia. If you have longer, the extra days are better spent slowing the pace than cramming in more.
How do you get from one to the other?
Most travellers fly. There are frequent domestic flights between Istanbul and the Cappadocia region, and the journey takes a little over an hour in the air. Flying keeps the travel day short and leaves more of your trip for the places themselves.
What a combined trip can look like
A natural shape is a few unhurried Istanbul days first — the Old City, the food, and a crossing to the Asian side — followed by Cappadocia, where mornings are quiet and the light on the valleys is at its best. From there some travellers add another region, such as Ephesus or Pamukkale, to round out the journey. We look at how these pieces fit together in our Turkey itinerary guide.
Planning it as one private journey
The easiest way to combine Istanbul and Cappadocia is to have the whole thing planned as a single private journey, so the guiding, transfers and hotels line up around your dates. That is exactly what our Turkey trips are designed for.
